How Legionnaires’ Outbreaks Can Occur
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by exposure to contaminated water, and the bacteria that causes it tends to prefer warm, dark, damp areas. Some common places that people may be exposed include:
- Swimming pools
- Hot tubs
- Showers and baths
- HVAC systems
- Cooling towers
- Water pipes
Basic cleaning can reduce or eliminate the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, which is why its appearance is often a sign of negligence on the part of property owners.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease
Legionnaires’ disease is often underdiagnosed due to its resemblance to other respiratory infections. These symptoms include:
- Fever
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
Only laboratory testing can confirm a Legionnaires’ diagnosis, so you should get tested as soon as possible if you think you have been exposed.
Who is at Risk From Legionnaires’ Disease?
The people who are most at risk of Legionnaires’ disease are those who already suffer from certain health problems, or who otherwise have issues fighting off infections. These include:
- People over the age of 50
- Former or current smokers
- People with respiratory illnesses (COPD, emphysema, asthma)
- People with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients and transplant recipients
- People with certain other chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or liver disease
