The outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease on the Upper East Side of Manhattan has expanded to include 76 buildings, more than double what was originally identified by public health officials. At least 62 individuals have been sickened in this outbreak, though thankfully no deaths at this time. Legionella Confirmed At 76 Locations Across Upper East Side

 

Health Department testing has discovered the presence of Legionella, the bacteria responsible for causing Legionnaires’ disease, at 76 locations across the Upper East Side. This includes buildings throughout the 10028, 10128 and 10075 area codes, and includes buildings like the Guggenheim Museum, the Spence and Dalton private schools, and a Courtyard Marriott hotel. 62 Infections Confirmed by Laboratory Testing

 

As of July 16, there have been 62 individuals confirmed to have contracted Legionnaires’ disease in the ongoing outbreak, 53 of whom required hospitalization. Victims are typically over the age of 50, or have ongoing health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease. Sadly, this is not likely to be the end of it, as Legionnaires’ disease may take time to appear, and some people may not have had appropriate testing to confirm a Legionnaires’ diagnosis.

 

Testing of Buildings Has Finished For Now, But More Victims May Appear

 

The Health Department has said that it has concluded initial testing of buildings for the time being, and no further buildings are expected to test positive for the bacteria. However, that does not mean the outbreak is over, as the hot summer weather creates ideal conditions for the growth of Legionella. People in the affected area should be wary, and seek medical attention if they begin to display flu-like symptoms, as they may have contracted Legionnaires’ disease.
